"THAT'S NOT WHAT I HEARD"
Even though we live in the age of communication, it seems that the modeling industry sometimes lives in the age of confusion and rumors. Unfortunately many of these misunderstandings are created when industry experts and authorities are quoted out of context. It seems that there are certain areas that are consistently misunderstood.
COMMON MODELING MYTHS
"Only Beautiful People Can Find Work"
Most people assume that a model has to be perfect and beautiful in every detail for them to succeed. While this may have been the standard years ago, this is simply not true today. There is a demand for all ages, types and ethnics.
"All I need to get started is a snapshot."
The question really is, can I get started with a snapshot? Remember, there is a tremendous amount of competition in the modeling industry. Your photo will only receive the attention of a client for a split second. You must make the best impression possible in a short time to create interest in yourself. Forget the snapshot and get a GREAT composition card. A model who has proven they have the necessary tools to compete at a professional level has a far greater liklihood of landing that all important booking than someone who has just sent in a snapshot on a whim.
"If an agency likes me they will pay for everything I need."
This is likely the most misleading rumor circulating in the modeling field today. You, as the model, will be responsible for acquiring the necessary tools to work. The truth is, no agency will pay for the tools you need to enter this business. These items are the property of the model, not an agency.
"Only one in a million can make it"
While the odds for fame and fortune may seem low, they are more often attributed to the drive behind the model. Remember it's the model who must get themselves to the calls and auditions. It's the model who must sacrifice their time and energy. Dedicated models with potential will surely be the most successful.
